Atlantic Beach Florida – A Great Place to Enjoy the Beaches

Known for miles of white beaches, great climate year round and variety of recreational activities Atlantic Beach is a popular vacation destination. A large number of hotels, restaurants, bars and shopping are located in the area. There is also a wide range of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed such as biking, hiking and kayaking. Several parks and nature trails can be found throughout the city which also offers fishing, boating and golfing.

The city is also a popular shopping destination offering a wealth of boutiques and fitness centers along with two oceanfront hotels that are a perfect place for families to relax and enjoy the Atlantic coast breezes. There are also many restaurants to choose from which offer a wide variety of cuisines. From fresh seafood to classic American fare there is something for everyone to enjoy.

A number of cultural events and festivals are held each year which adds to the excitement of the city. These include the annual Shrimp and Jazz Festival, Atlantic Beach Artwalk, the Arts in the Park Festival, the Black History Month Parade and several others. The Beaches Town Center is the focal point of Atlantic Beach and is home to many restaurants, shops and two oceanfront hotels.

Atlantic Beach is also a historic city with a rich and varied past. It was created by rail magnate Henry Flagler who built his Continental Hotel about half way between Mayport from Pablo (now Jacksonville) Beach with the intention of attracting monied people as guests of the hotel and selling lots to them as well.

The hotel was a beautiful structure painted FEC yellow with a six story rotunda and five story wings that could accommodate 350 people. It was a popular vacation spot for the wealthy during its heyday in the 1920s and movie stars, politicians and even gangsters would be seen strolling its hallways.

However, the hotel was not a profitable enterprise due to war fears and other factors. Eventually it was sold to Harcourt Bull who renamed the hotel as Atlantic Beach and began to sell land. In addition to renaming the hotel, he built a new office building and a bathhouse on the west side of what is now Beach Boulevard. The bathhouses were oriental in design and referred to as Pagoda buildings.

These improvements helped the town grow and by 1928 it was incorporated. The new town was named a city and its first mayor was appointed. During the next few years with funds from water revenue bonds, a sewer plant was constructed along with a new fire station and a 750 gallon per minute custom pumper.

Today the city has grown and is the second largest of the Jacksonville Beaches communities. It has become a popular retirement and family community that is a great place to live, work and play. The joy that the city once knew during its heyday of the 1930’s when it was considered to be the only Black-owned beach in the nation has started to wane as other beaches opened their doors to all.
